New Study finds new benefits from resveratrol to help Diabetes Resveratrol Benefits Type 2 Diabetic Patients with Periodontal Disease Resveratrol improves insulin resistance and markers of periodontitis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, according to a study epublished in November 2016. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 43 persons with type 2 diabetes and periodontal disease, researchers evaluated whether supplementation with a Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) extract standardized to high levels of resveratrol combined with nonsurgical periodontal treatment could improve metabolic abnormalities and periodontitis. The participants were randomly divided to receive either 480 mg/day of resveratrol or a placebo for 4 weeks. At baseline and after the study period, researchers evaluated fasting blood glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), triglycerides (TG), and gum pocket depth in all subjects. At the end of the study period, mean serum levels of fasting insulin and HOMA-IR scores were significantly lower in the resveratrol group than in the placebo group. Furthermore, mean pocket depth was significantly less in persons taking resveratrol. Resveratrol had no effect on mean levels of fasting blood glucose and TG. The study authors conclude that “resveratrol supplementation may be beneficial as adjuvant therapy along with nonsurgical periodontal treatment in insulin resistance and improving periodontal status among patients with diabetes with periodontal disease."
