Flip FlopsWe live in a tropical climate here in Florida. Flip flops are pretty standard footwear not only in the summer, but year round. They are easy to slip on and go with pretty much every style of clothing (at least according to SW Florida style standards). But how healthy are they for your feet?

According to the National Foot Health Assessment 2016, 78% of those 21 and older have experienced at least one-foot issue. Flip flops are a contributing factor.

What potential problems can wearing flip flops cause?

Ankle issues: Sprains and twists occur frequently due to lack of support. The foot is not held in place at all by the shoe itself. Ankles with no foot arch support tend to lean inwards throwing the entire body off balance.

Heal Pain: Plantar Fascia is caused when there is too much strain placed on the connective tissue from the toes to the heel. The pain is felt as a stabbing or burning feeling when walking.

Toe Issues: When wearing flip flops people tend to scrunch their toes in order to keep the shoes on. This throws off your gate when walking which can lead, over time, to neck and hip problems.

Arch Pain: Flip flops are flat and have a thin sole and no arch support. This causes the foot to collapse with every step. Over time it can cause pain.

Your Stride: Flip flops make you take shorter steps while turning your ankles inwards. This can cause long-term hip problems.

Tips for minimizing flip-flop risk:

  • Choose a shoe with sturdier soles and more cushioning than your typical flip flop.
  • Pick one with a built-in arch support.
  • Higher quality soft leather straps can help prevent blisters.
  • Limit time in flip flops
  • Never wear them while playing sports
  • Replace thin soled flips flops every 4 months as they wear very unevenly and the more uneven the worse they are for your feet

It’s unreasonable to expect people to ditch the flip flops here in South West Florida. Cutting down the wear time and switching to more supportive shoes in between can greatly boost your foot, leg, and hip health as well as extend the life of your shoes.
