serotoninWhat is serotonin and what does it do?

Serotonin is a compound present in our blood. It acts as a neurotransmitter and is partly responsible for our mood, social behavior and even digestion, appetite, and emotional health.

We live in a world where the new normal has become some level of depression. Antidepressants are one of the top prescribed medications in the United States. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are often readily prescribed at the first sign of depression rather than trying to take a natural approach.

SSRI’s, though helpful to some, have the potential for numerous disastrous side effects including:

  • Nausea
  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • Insomnia
  • Dizziness
  • Nervousness
  • Agitation
  • Restlessness
  • Headache
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Blurred vision

It's important to note that SSRI’s are not a fix. They are a temporary band-aid relief from symptoms and should be utilized as such.

Because of the amount pharmaceutical companies pay for advertising, watching television and magazine ads one might believe that medication is the only answer. This is simply not the case.

Here are some natural suggestions to try before jumping on the pop a pill bandwagon.

Probiotics - Most of your serotonin is produced in the gut. Probiotics can help balance your intestinal flora and play a part in nutrient absorption.

B-Complex - In order for the body to make Tryptophan (a necessary ingredient in serotonin), it needs B-Complex.

Tryptophan - A supplemental version of tryptophan should be taken at a meal with no proteins for proper absorption.

5-htp - 5-HTP works in the brain and central nervous system by increasing the production of the chemical serotonin.

Sunlight - Sunlight itself raises your serotonin levels. Get outside without sunblock for a minimum of 15 minutes a day.

Exercise - Though all exercise boosts serotonin, cardio works best. Feel down? Head to the gym.

Massage - Massage has been shown to raise levels of serotonin. Getting regular massages is highly beneficial to health.

The natural way is always best because it treats the core of the problem - deficiency. No one has ever been depressed due to a lack of prescription drugs in their system.
