Muscle testing involves the application of light pressure to a muscle, usually on in the arm. If a muscle gives way on testing this is read as a negative, or no. If the muscle remains strong on testing then this is read as a positive, or yes. By testing the person in the presence of potential stresses, i.e. foods, chemicals and thoughts,  among many others, the doctor is able to determine what weakens and stresses the energy system and, more importantly, what will strengthen it. 

In order to help remove the stress from the system, the doctor will use information gained through testing to select appropriate acupuncture points for the treatment. Depending on the nature of the correction, the doctor will either hold or tap the points, thus returning and rebalancing the energy system while supporting the body's natural healing mechanisms.
